About Audi A4
The Audi A4 is now on its fourth generation, it all started with the B5 Audi A4 beginning in 1996 for the US market and ending in 2001. The early Audi A4 models are based on the VW Group B platform while a later model B8 A4 is produced from using the VW Group MLB platform. This model has always been offered in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive Quattro configurations with 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engine options. The Audi A4 can be found in sedan, wagon and convertible body types with the wagon most commonly referred to as the Avant. The early model Audi A4s were powered using a 1.8 liter 20 valve engines, there was also a 2.8L V6 12 valve option for the B5 A4. The Audi A4 continued as the B6 from 2002 to 2005 with totally new styling by Peter Schreyer. Available with drivetrain options including an automatic, manual 5-Speed or manual 6-speed transmission depending on model year. There was an Ultra Sport option specifically for the US market for the last year of the B6 Audi A4. The Ultra Sport package included S Line upgrades with aluminum interiors trim, different spoilers and side skirts along with RS4 styled rims. The revised B7 Audi A4 chassis platform was first available in the US as a 2005.5 model year. This chassis was similar to the outgoing B6 chassis with improved suspension, steering and changes made to the engine options. The 2005 model year marked the first year of the FSI engine in the A4, FSI stands for Fuel Stratified Injection. There was also a 3.2 liter engine available with a configuration using four valves per cylinder. In 2007 Audi rolled out a special edition A4 most commonly known as an S Line addition with a sporty black optics package, a slight bump in horsepower, upgraded RS4 style rims along with interior and exterior touches making the car more sporty overall.A new redesign and platform for the A4 was rolled out in 2009 for the North American market as the B8 chassis. The wheel base was increased on the newer models improving rear leg room made possible by using the new Audi Modular Longitudinal Platform (MLP). The LED headlights were a standout in the segment giving the luxury sedan a unique look separating it from the rest. The A4 was still available in sedan and avant wagon body types with the coupe named the Audi A5 and was built using the same platform. The front wheel drive version of the A4 is equipped with a CVT transmission only while the all-wheel drive Quattro models come with either a 6-speed manual or quick shifting 8-speed automatic transmission.
